About Mombacho Cloud Forest
The Reserva Nacional Volcán Mombacho was set up to protect and study the unique ecology of Mombacho Volcano.
The cloudforest is able to grow here due to the volcano's height – its peak is frequently cloud covered – and the strong, cooling winds from Lago de Nicaragua.
There's a well-marked trail around the four craters at the top of the volcano with signs explaining some of the reserve's unique flora and fauna. At the furthest point of the trail there are magnificent views of Lake Nicaragua, Granada, Las Isletas, Masaya and Laguna de Apoyo.
